1991 Wards, local authorities, counties, government standard regions

Introduction

The United Kingdom has two major forms of geographical addressing, the postal geography illustrated in the Introduction to the UK postcode system and the administrative geography detailed here.

The UK administrative geography - like the postal geography - is hierarchical in form such that a Census Enumeration District (ED)

01AAFA01
falls within a Census Ward
01AAFA - Aldersgate
which is a component of the Local Authority (LA)
01AA - City of London
and county
01 - Inner London
which in turn is a component of the Government Standard Region (GSR)
05 - South East.
In 1991 there were over 130,000 EDs (the lowest level at which 1991 Census Small Area Statistics are available), 459 Local Authorities, 67 Counties and 10 Government Standard Regions.

1991 Census counts, and a number of other data sets, may be aggregated to any of these levels and displayed in a Geographical Information System using the appropriate boundaries.

Business Geographics 1991 administrative boundaries

Administrative boundaries compiled using Thiessen processing to produce contiguous non-overlapping boundaries around each of the ca150,000 enumeration district/output area centroids subsequently dissolved to ward, local authority district, county and government standard region levels.

This data set covers England, Wales and Scotland incorporating all ED/OA centroids and is fully consistent with the 1991 enhanced enumeration district centroids detailed in 1991 Census Small Area Statistics and Local Base Statistics. Individual Enumeration District or Output Area centroids from this file will nest - except where there are gross errors on these data sets - within the correct ward, local authority or county boundary.

Business Geographics administrative boundary sets are updated in accordance with changes in UK administrative geography.

ED-LINE 1991 administrative boundaries

1991 Census enumeration district boundaries, ward and parish boundaries for England and Wales digitised from the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys original 1:10,000 scale master enumeration district maps and matched to within one metre of the equivalent Ordnance Survey Boundary Line ward boundaries. Supplied at two scales, 1:10,000 for those applications where a high degree of positional accuracy is required and at smaller scales (1:200,000 in England & Wales, 1:100,000 scale in Scotland and 1:50,000 scale in Northern Ireland) for more general marketing applications.

Please note that the Marketeer datasets include all the derivative boundaries for the level purchased (ie ward boundaries will be included when ED boundaries are purchased) and that the Scottish set of ED-LINE Marketeer is only available on a Corporate Licence unless it is purchased as part of the full UK Marketeer dataset.
