1991 Census Small Area Statistics and Local Base Statistics

Introduction

A Census of population is conducted every ten years in the United Kingdom by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys (OPCS). 1991 was the last year that such an exercise was undertaken. A description of the legal basis for the Census, the questions asked and the format of the data collection exercise is given in the Introduction to the 1991 Census

Census data is collected, processed and anonymised by OPCS prior to release to Crown-appointed Census Agents such as Business Geographics. OPCS release the data at the lowest level of aggregation, the Enumeration District, detailing population characteristics for groups of around 150-200 households.

Business Geographics have added value to the 1991 Census by extracting the most useful variables from the 9000 or so available from OPCS, aggregating the counts to commonly used geographical areas (such as postcode sectors, 1991 wards) and supplying the data for use in a variety of database packages or Geographical Information Systems.
