Postcode to Enumeration District link

Introduction

The Business Geographics postcode to enumeration district link provides the mechanism for the aggregation of 1991 Census ED level data to the sector, district and area levels of the UK postcode system.

The file also provides a direct link between enumeration districts (ca150-200 households) and postcodes (ca15 households), such that postcodes - and the addresses within them - can be targeted on the basis of ED level Census variables for direct mail, face-to-face interviewing and so on.

Prices are in UK Sterling and refer to single-user licensing on a personal computer.

Postcode to ED link

The Business Geographics postcode to ED link is a cross-reference between the ca1.7 million unit postcodes in POSTZON and the ca150,000 enumeration districts of the 1991 Census.

The postcode sector to ED link provides a similar lookup at postcode sector level, with a weighting factor for enumeration districts which straddle postcode sectors.

The postcode to ED link data set is created by:

  • determining which unit postcode centroids are inside, outside but within 2 standard deviations of the sector centroid, or outside their postcode sector boundary and more than 2 standard deviations from the sector centroid
  • determining which ED centroids are inside, outside but within 2 standard deviations of the ward centroid, or outside their ward boundary and more than 2 standard deviations from the ward centroid
  • linking postcode centroids to ED centroids by proximity
  • The postcode-ED link and postcode sector-ED link data sets are updated every six months to reflect changes in POSTZON.
